Traveller walking towards an ancient stone temple

Pick up a local SIM at the airport with your passport and visa copy; coverage in the hill sections is patchy regardless of provider, so download offline maps before you leave the plains.

Carry cash, more than you think

Ashrams, small kitchens and boatmen work in cash. ATMs exist in the towns but not on the routes between them. Keep small notes for donations and offerings.

What to leave at home

Heavy suitcases, anything valuable, and any expectation of hotel service. Bring a padlock, a reusable bottle, and one warm layer more than the forecast suggests.
